What Scaffolding Components & Accessories Are Commonly Used?

Commonly Used Scaffolding Components & Accessories

Scaffolding is a temporary structure that supports a team of workers and materials to help construct, repair and maintain buildings, bridges and all other man-made structures. Scaffolding is referred to as staging or scaffold as well. Scaffolds are extensively used onsite to gain access to heights and areas that would be otherwise difficult to reach.

When specific scaffolding accessories are added, specific jobs are easier to perform. So, the right accessories will help make your job site safer and make assembling and erecting a scaffold easier.

Here are some of the widely used scaffold accessories and parts:

Decks

The planks on which workers stand to work are known as decks. They are available in hot-dip galvanized steel, aluminium and aluminium frame with a plywood board.

Scaffold Tubes

Scaffold tubes are made of steel or aluminium; they are also made of glass fibre for working around electric wiring. Scaffolding tubes are used to build a scaffold; a support system put up outside of structures and buildings under construction.

Standards

Standards are also known as uprights, rendering the perpendicular tubes used to transfer a structure’s weight. It’s an essential part that is used to provide support for the structure’s weight.

Transoms

Transoms aid in creating the right angles – the part of the scaffold inclining on the ledgers. They support the standards and render a place for the boards to fit. They are made from two lengths of 50mm X 50mm angle (iron welded back-to-back), creating an inverted “T” section with banana transom ends gathered at each end.

Ledgers

Ledgers are another vital component of scaffolding; they are flat beams that support the scaffolding. They give a firm platform for the workers to stand and work. The ledgers help in spreading the weight of the scaffolding evenly. The scaffolds would be uneven and risky without ledgers.

Toe Boards

The toe-boards are available in aluminium, steel or wood and are placed between vertical standards. They aid in reducing the danger of a fire and make the scaffolding safer to use.

Scaffold Couplers

A tube and coupler scaffold has a platform supported by tubing and is set up with coupling devices attaching uprights, braces, runners and bearers. Fitting holds tubes together. Scaffold couplers are available in three types: swivel, right angle and in-line couplers.

Adjustable Base Plates

Adjustable base plates help with height adjustments, so selecting the right base plate is crucial.

The other scaffold accessories and parts include:

  • Internal ladders/stairs
  • Scaffold caster wheels
  • Hoist Arm Assemblies
  • Scaffold Jacks/Mud Sills

The Bottom Line

Getting the right parts and accessories to set up the scaffolding for the job is imperative, making your job site functional and safer.
